From Framing to Draftsman: A Building Love Affair
Following my freshman year of college, I answered an ad in the paper (remember those?) for a Carpenter’s Helper. I needed a summer job to continue my education, so I applied.
It wasn’t long before I discovered that I LOVED doing carpentry work and it wasn’t long before I found myself being put in charge of running framing crews.
I built my first house independently when I was 21 and then a second house of my own design when I was just 22.
Eventually, I became a self-employed framing contractor at age 25 with a crew of five men, primarily building custom homes.
It is because of this early and extensive building background that I am able, as a draftsman, to draw plans with “hands-on” knowledge of how good houses are constructed.
Moving Beyond Framing
It was during my early 30’s that I began to transition away from only framing houses and gravitated more towards woodworking. During that time I got jobs in various wood shops and eventually set up my own shop where my focus was on cabinetry and furniture making.
About this time, I also became a building superintendent overseeing commercial work in the San Francisco Bay Area. It was in that role that I became responsible for the installation of the first CT Scanner at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto during the early ’80s.
Making A Home In Sonoma County
Eventually, in 1990, I moved my family to Santa Rosa onto five acres just west of town. It was here that I designed and built my own custom home and cabinet shop. I also developed and construction other outbuildings for a total of over 9,000 square feet.
The digital age had arrived so, in May of 2000, I took classes at Santa Rosa Junior College and learned to use the AutoCAD program, a computer software used by architects and engineers.
It was not long after that I launched my Design and Drafting business in March of 2004. Since then I have created mostly house plans for people and have drawn plans for over 500 projects to date.
Today, because of that work and my background, I feel immensely qualified, as your draftsman, to draw just about anything from smaller, intricate designs to larger projects such as houses and even warehouses.
I hope I can be of service to you…
Respectfully,
Rick Bolduc
